At the A Third Place Community Center, 6514 N. Peoria, we often offer various opportunities to help feed one another in our area of Turley, North Tulsa and Sperry.
1. We have food to give away that comes from within our community and from without. Right now we have lots of cucumbers, bags of lettuce, and buns. We also have fruit as well as our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that we keep available to all at any time. We often have excellent leftovers from the meals prepared or served as part of our many programs, and our programs themselves almost always come with free meal as part of the event. We are working with some churches, beyond The LivingRoom Church at A ThirdPlace, to keep this going and growing.
2. We are members of the Oklahoma Food Coop so people can order through us without having to have their own membership (we encourage those who can afford to do it to do so to support the worthwhile group, but if you can't you can order through us). Go to http://www.oklahomafood.coop/. It is easy. Each month between the first day of the month and the second Thursday you can see the thousands of items available and their prices and you can choose and give us your order. Then when the deadline comes on the second Thursday we will put in the order. We like to get paid when we submit the order but you can also do so when you pick up your order. The orders come in on the third Thursday of each month. We pick them up and bring them to A Third Place in the evening where you can get them then or the next day and pay if you haven't. Please pick them up as soon as possible. We also encourage people to go in together to get the best deals especially helpful when ordering meat, as you can get whole sides and half sides of beef cut up to specifications. 3. We offer a free nutrition class each Tuesday at noon offered by the OSU Extension Service. It is always open and offers a variety of topics related to eating healthy and inexpensive.
4. We are putting a big focus this coming year on transforming our area with community gardens to grow the cheapest healthiest food within our own "foodshed". If you are interested in being a part of a community garden let us know. You will hear more about this soon. We also encourage people to go in together to share livestock and can help you with that.
5. We also now have our new cookstove at the Center and can do more of our own food meals. You will be hearing more about that soon too and let us know if you are interested in helping.

All are invited and needed this Saturday Dec. 13 for the pancake breakfast in support of A Third Place Center. Come to the Odd Fellows Lodge building at 6227 N. Quincy between 8 and 11 am. All you can eat pancakes sausage eggs biscuits and gravy juice and coffee. Freewill donation. This is a great way to give back to our community center, 6514 N. Peoria, where we giveback to the community with our free library, internet center, clinic, donation room, programs, meeting space, food programs, and more.

Free Nutrition classes set in Turley
With the help of the OU Health Clinic, the OSU Extension Center is offering free nutrition classes here at A Third Place community center, now every Thursday at 12:30 p.m. You can come to all or any one of the classes. The next one will be Thursday, Sept. 18 and the topic will be on Food Safety. It is a timely and needed topic, especially for families, day cares, and more. Help us spread the word.

Vote Tuesday August 26, and Community Meeting
The run-off election for House District 72 which covers most of the Turley area will be held Tuesday, August 26, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Also on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at O'Brien Park Recreation Center, 61st and North Lewis Ave., is the monthly meeting of the Turley Community Association. Go meet officials, hear reports from county officials, share concerns, and hear updates of community projects.
(Also, Tuesday August 26th is the National Women's Rights Day honoring the amendment to the U.S. constitution affording women the right to vote; the last state to ratify the 19th amendment, Tennessee, certified its vote supporting that amendment on this day back in 1920. Special thank you to all the women of Turley, past, present, future).
Election sites are the Turley Assembly of God at 63rd and Peoria, First Baptist Church of Turley on 71st St. east of Peoria, Gethsamene Baptist on 56th St. west of Peoria, and perhaps at Greeley Elementary near 61st and Cincinnati (I say perhaps because much of the area in that part of Turley falls in another House District where there is no run-off election on Tuesday; that is my area for example; we are just across the street from where House District 72 is; I guess someone has to be a "fringe edge of a district" somewhere, though a little redistricting might be in order).
At A Third Place Center we are non-partisan but are partisan about voting and celebrating democracy itself and have voter registration forms. We also try to get out the accurate information about who is elgible to vote. Many in our area assume that if they, or someone they know or are in their family, has had a felony conviction that it means they can't vote ever again. The law is different. Felons can vote depending on how long their sentence was, and how long it has been since their release. The information is on the voter registration forms which we have at the Center.
As we head into a presidential election year, too, we seek to encourage civil discussion, lively interest in all candidates, and above all else increased voter registration and turnout. Recent statistics about voting in Tulsa County that have documented turnout in areas of North and East and South and West Tulsa show that voting in North Tulsa including Turley area has the lowest percentage of any area. This means for one thing that elected officials and government officials who are not elected but answer to those who are will not have the same incentive to pay attention to residents who do not pay attention to their own area through the basic duty of voting.
As we seek to build community spirit and hope and partnerships, let it begin with citizenship, information, sharing, and participation.

Food Bank and Free Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Lunches for Turley and area kids. Our area has almost 100 percent of the children receiving subsidized lunches during the school year, but what about when the school year is over? We don't want any families to go hungry. We are setting up a program to offer peanut butter sandwiches for lunch for free, plus we have our mini food bank. Donations of volunteer time to help with the lunch is needed, as well as food for the food bank. Call Ron at 794-4637 and help us spread the word. We would love to have lunch available at noon each day; just need volunteers to help take an hour one day to help facilitate it.

The Living Room Church events in A Third Place in Turley
We have lots of volunteers from different churches in the Turley area and from those with no church affiliation. We hope to grow with even more and help all the churches in our area grow in service and spirit. We also have The Living Room church meeting on Wednesday evenings in A Third Place, open to all. In May on Wednesdays there will be a special read and discuss of the latest book by Shane Claiborne called "Jesus for President: politics for ordinary radicals". Common meal at 6 p.m. open to all, followed by the conversation, and all are invited to stay for the 7:30 p.m. short service of prayers, candle-lighting, communion. A Third Place Center has received a donation of 600 trees of all varieties, redbuds, birches, ash, and more, which will be given away on Saturday, April 5, here at the Center, as part of our partneership with OU and Turley Talks. Spread the word. Help us beautify our area and make a living statement to the world. We also received a printer/copier for use in the free internet and library area of A Third Place Center. Our "A Third Place" Center received more television coverage this weekend, on Tulsa Channel 2 news, as we did our Turley Talks kick-off event partnering with OU. The video included shots outside and some inside our space as the community forum were being held, and they also did some shots of places around the community. They were here early in the day and their coverage focused more on the needs of the area, while the program itself is focusing on the assets we have, uncovering and unleashing them, and building community from the inside out and the bottom up rather than waiting for "fixes" to come from anywhere or anyone else.
Free meal for those who participate. Next gatherings will be Friday, April 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sat. April 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Everyone had a fantastic time. Come and participate and talk about what you like about living in Turley, what our strengths and assets are, breaking stereotypes and going beyond statistics. OU is helping us to identify our strengths, connect them, and unleash them to address our challenges.
